The Pattern You Inherited Can Be Changed | See what's driving it and take back control

Something keeps showing up. In your arguments. In your relationships. In the way you overcommit and then resent every minute of it. It's a behavioral pattern that no longer works, and it didn't start with you.

Maybe shutting down during conflict traces back to a kitchen table where speaking your truth wasn't safe. Maybe you say yes to everything because somewhere along the way, disappointing people became the thing you feared most.

You see it, yet you're still doing it.

So the question becomes: now what?

What Does Seeing the Pattern Actually Change?

More than you think.

Most people try to fix behavior first by attempting to bulldoze their way through, forcing patience, ignoring their inner voice, pushing through discomfort, willing themselves to respond differently.

Sometimes things seem to change. For a week or maybe even a month. Then you (and those around you) notice that the pattern comes right back, even faster when you’re under pressure. Same reaction, different day.

Here's why. You can't outperform a pattern you haven't fully seen. You can manage it temporarily. But until you understand where it started, why it made sense, and how it's still showing up — you're fighting something you can't even name clearly.

Clarity changes the game. When you can see the pattern — really see it — the reaction stops feeling like a personal failure. It starts making sense. And something that makes sense can finally be addressed.

You stop asking "what's wrong with me?" and start asking "what is this behavior really about?"

That shift changes everything.

Why Does Awareness Come Before Action?

Because you can't choose differently until you can see what you've been choosing on auto-pilot.

Think about it. It’s not like you don’t know that something is awry. You’ve tried to get yourself to respond differently.  You’ve read the books, listened to the podcasts, and recited the mantras - “I am not going to react that way again. I’m going to do better.”  But it hasn’t stuck, and it isn’t because you are wrong or because you lack willpower. It’s because a pattern is running on auto-pilot in the undercurrent of your awareness. It is so close that it feels like it is just the way things are for you, but that isn’t true!

Awareness is the foundation that makes all the difference. Without it, every strategy is a temporary fix. Every tool is a band-aid on a pattern that's been running the show since childhood.

With awareness you will start to notice the moment before the reaction. The tightness in your chest before you snap. The familiar pull to shut down or fight back before you've even processed what was said. The urge to control things, before you've asked yourself what you're actually afraid of.

That pause, the one between what triggers you and how you respond, is where conscious choice wants the opportunity to help you shift. Awareness is what creates that opportunity.

What Happens AT Your Past Is Your Present?

Your Past Is Your Present is a two-hour live session on Zoom. No therapy. No group sharing you didn't sign up for. No one putting you on the spot.

Here's what actually happens.

I walk you through how inherited patterns form — not in theory, but in the specific ways they show up in your life right now. We look at how your nervous system learned its rules early, and why those rules are still running your responses decades later.

Then you map the pattern. You'll identify one pattern you recognize — the shutdown, the people-pleasing, the need to control — and trace it back to where it started. You'll see why it made sense then. And you'll see clearly how it's showing up now, in your relationships, your work, your daily life.

The pace is steady. The tone is grounded. There's no pressure to share. Just clarity.

What Do You Leave With?

You leave with your eyes open.

You'll understand one pattern clearly enough to recognize it when it shows up — not after the damage, but in the moment it activates. You'll know where it came from. You'll see what it's been costing you. And you'll have the awareness to make a different choice the next time it runs.

You'll leave knowing something about yourself that's been hidden in plain sight. And once you're aware of it, there's no going back.

Real change doesn't come from hacks or mantras. It comes from catching a pattern before it catches you.

Where Do I Go From Here?

This is the final article in a three-part series on how inherited patterns shape the way we respond — and what it actually takes to interrupt them. In the first article, we explored why you keep reacting like your parents. In the second, we looked at where those patterns come from and what they're costing you now.

If you've read all three and something landed — that's not a coincidence. That's the recognition that something needs to change. And recognition is exactly where this work begins.

Join me for Your Past Is Your Present. Two hours. Live on Zoom. One pattern. Full clarity.
