Are You Brave Enough to Dream Again? | How daring to imagine a new way forward can transform everything
We are navigating a period of profound change, with fear, loss, and bewilderment troubling many of our day-to-day thoughts. The question now isn’t just about how to move forward; it’s about defining the values that will guide us into and through the next era.
Now more than ever, rethinking the fundamentals—embracing imagination, leading with love, and building spaces where people feel safe to simply exist—seems less like an interesting thought experiment and more like a critical survival strategy. Whether in our personal lives and communities or even at the national level, cultivating these principles has the potential to bridge divides and chart a path toward collective healing and growth.
“The question now isn’t just about how to move forward; it’s about defining the values that will guide us into and through the next era.”
In Part 2 of the Shaping Freedom podcast featuring Kevin Powell, Kevin and Lisane Basquiat discuss three core values: embracing imagination, leading with love and creating safety.
The idea of embracing imagination as a catalyst for profound growth and change. was a lesson Kevin learned early in his life, inspired by his mother. “She told me when I was two or three years old “You’re going to go to college.” Despite what seemed like an unbreachable lack of resources, his mother’s vision shaped his trajectory and he made it happen. This underscores the power of imagining beyond present limitations, a lesson for individuals and communities: envisioning possibilities, however “unrealistic,” is often the first step toward transformation.
Kevin’s narrative also highlights the need for loving kindness in all communities, confronting the deeply ingrained stereotype that manhood, especially Black manhood, is incompatible with love. “We think manhood has nothing to do with love—nothing to do with being soft, kind, open, or vulnerable,” Kevin shared. “This is destructive to us—to our spirits, our minds, and our bodies.” The cultural expectation for men to prioritize physical strength over tenderness doesn’t just harm individuals, it fuels cycles of emotional and social disconnection that lead to weaker community bonds. Reclaiming love as a core value can offer a powerful antidote, particularly for Black men navigating a world that often misrepresents their humanity. Kevin’s insistence on love as a guiding principle reminds us of its transformative power: “Hate doesn’t work, violence doesn’t work, trauma doesn’t work... Why can’t we try love?”
“Hate doesn’t work, violence doesn’t work, trauma doesn’t work... Why can’t we try love?”
Kevin also highlights the third value—the creation of safe spaces for all—by noting its lack in our contemporary world: “As a society and a world, we are unwell; and violence dominates everything. Lack of safety dominates everything.” The shared human need for belonging and connection underscores the importance of environments where individuals can feel protected and supported. By prioritizing safety and inclusion, we foster authentic relationships that open the door to collective joy. The simple yet profound act of saying, “Let me create the space that I want to see,” as Kevin announces, transforms communities, revealing what’s possible when the value of safety becomes the foundation for meaningful connection.
In this time of upheaval and transformation, the mandate is unmistakable: reimagine the future with courage, lead with unapologetic love, and build sanctuaries where every person feels safe. This is the bedrock of both our survival and our progress.
TL;DR (Too Long Didn’t Read)
Imagination creates transformation: Envisioning a better future, even in the face of adversity, is a powerful tool for growth.
Redefining manhood with love: Embracing softness, kindness, and vulnerability can dismantle harmful stereotypes about masculinity, especially for Black men.
The importance of safe spaces: Intentional inclusivity fosters connection and belonging, even across deep divides.
Love as a strategy for change: Compassion and empathy offer practical solutions to challenges of violence, division, and disconnection.
