From Divided to United | How The Path Forward Starts with Building a Culture Rooted in Love
In the aftermath of the recent U.S. election, we are once again reminded that we live in a country where deep-rooted differences divide us. To heal, we need to move beyond the rhetoric and face our collective responsibility in dismantling systems of oppression. This isn’t just a political or social issue; it’s deeply personal. We are all being called forth to consider how our actions, words, and biases continue to perpetuate cycles of hate and marginalization. As we know, injustice does not occur in a vacuum.
“We are all being called forth to consider how our actions, words, and biases continue to perpetuate cycles of hate and marginalization.”
In one of our most popular episodes of the Shaping Freedom podcast, writer, activist, and television personality Kevin Powell reveals his own personal journey toward becoming a man who can consciously address and correct his own negative beliefs and attitudes about women. “I was disrespectful to women in the community,” Kevin admits. “And to this day, you can go on social media and see a lot of folks who call themselves woke, aware, conscious, whatever they call themselves—brothers who have no respect for women and girls at all.” When we ourselves have faced systemic oppression, it can sometimes be difficult to hold a mirror up to our own intolerance and bigotry.
But, in the current political climate, cultivating this kind of awareness is nothing less than crucial. Through his own re-education, Kevin began to understand that an individual cannot fight for equality if they cannot recognize the inequality that surrounds them. Reflecting on how men are conditioned to embody dominance, Kevin asks, “How can you say you're anti-oppression, anti-hate, anti-marginalization, then you turn around and…perpetuate oppression, hate, marginalization against other people?” By recognizing his own biases, Kevin began to understand that societal and cultural conditioning had led him down a path that was perpetuating oppressive beliefs and behaviors: “I realized that my manhood, as I was taught to define it, was hurting others.”
“We must actively create a world where love, kindness, and service to others become the foundation of our communities.”
Kevin also recognizes that true manhood isn’t about avoiding vulnerability, but embracing it: “It wasn’t just about being tough; it was about learning to be tender, loving, and kind.” This insight is important not just for men, but for everyone: to break down harmful stereotypes and build a culture of empathy, accountability, and mutual support, we must lean on love and disavow hate in all forms. “Sexism won’t end until we as men help make it end,” Kevin states, and this powerful message speaks directly to the heart of the problem: the need for us all to take responsibility for the ways we contribute to inequality. By drawing a connection between the societal issues we face today and a lack of genuine care for one another, we can address larger systemic issues from a place of genuine and united strength.
In a country divided, real change starts with listening to those who have been marginalized, and by doing the demanding work of confronting injustice—both internally and externally. We must actively create a world where love, kindness, and service to others become the foundations of our communities. This is the kind of world that leaders like Dr. King envisioned, one where love doesn’t just remain an abstract ideal but becomes a lived reality that guides our actions and relationships.
