Beyond the Mirror | Here’s How to See the Real You
Hitting the gym or taking a Pilates class can do wonders for the body, but we all know that true wellness reaches far beyond the physical.
So what if we began to think about fitness in terms of stretching, toning, and strengthening our thoughts and emotions? When we begin to think about the health and robustness of our inner aspect, we reconnect with our deepest selves, cultivating resilience that goes way beyond squats and reps. By strength training our mental, emotional, and spiritual “core,” we can create the proper foundation for healing, growth, and fulfillment in all areas of our lives.
“Just like with physical fitness, there are a ton of ways you can consciously and responsibly address your inner fitness.”
On the Shaping Freedom podcast, actress Tina Lifford, author of The Inner Fitness Revolution, emphasizes, “We were never taught that we have inner fitness!” This concept, which came to Tina after taking a two-year spiritual psychology course, helped her to understand inner fitness as a profound counterpart to physical fitness—with many of the same challenges and victories.
As with working out, inner fitness can be tough to practice: “Sometimes you don't want to do it,” says Tina. “Sometimes you get away from your routines, and all of a sudden you've got weight, or you've got a lack of energy.” Similarly, we can get out of alignment with our inner fitness, allowing negative thoughts and downbeat emotions to take us off the path of our wellness journey.
When this occurs, says Tina, “Just like with physical fitness, there are a ton of ways you can consciously and responsibly address your inner fitness.” And surprisingly, what it all really comes down to is quite simple: our inner fitness begins with patiently asking our authentic self to share what it feels it needs to strengthen and nourish our inner aspect.
Learning to listen to this voice—whether it's telling us to step away from a toxic relationship or to simply take a moment to breathe and meditate—requires that we learn to align with ourselves, something that Tina celebrates as “the greatest gift we can give ourselves.”
“As we reconnect with and embrace our whole being, we create space for healing, growth, and transformation.”
It’s important to remember that this alignment doesn’t come from trying to meet the expectations of others; it arises from a deep acceptance of who we are and what we need at our core. Inner fitness is about cherishing all parts of ourselves—especially the ones we’ve kept hidden or fragmented for the sake of survival. “When you start seeing yourself in parts, it means there’s a conflict that has separated you from yourself in order to survive,” Tina reflects.
Understanding this inner fragmentation allows us to begin the healing process. We learn to integrate all aspects of ourselves, from our fears and imperfections to our strengths and dreams. By doing so, we stop rejecting parts of ourselves and begin to nurture the wholeness that leads to true and enduring inner fitness.
Inner fitness is more than a practice; it’s a way of being that centers our wellbeing as inextricably linked to our authenticity. As we reconnect with and embrace our whole being, we create space for healing, growth, and transformation.
When we stop living in conflict with who we are, we begin to thrive in ways we never thought possible. Inner fitness is not only about becoming our best selves—it’s about becoming our true selves, no matter the challenges life brings.
