Great Minds Don’t Think Alike | How Challenging Your Own Ideas Leads to Breakthroughs
Success, in business and beyond, is rarely achieved in isolation. The key to reaching one’s potential lies in the ability to collaborate, build trust, and cultivate discernment. Learning to navigate the complexities of success often begins by understanding the importance of people, above all. In the ever-changing landscape of the digital age, a clear vision is crucial, but it is only effective when supported by a hardworking and forward-thinking team.
On the Shaping Freedom podcast, public relations veteran and image consultant Angelo Ellerbee—who has represented industry legends such as Mary J. Blige, Michael Jackson, Alicia Keys, and DMX—shares his perspective on surrounding himself with people whose viewpoints he values.
“Listen, I have a team of people…these are my ‘thinking cats.’ They tell me what’s right,” Ellerbee explains. “And I keep a lot of young people around me. I ain’t stupid. My way of doing things is one way. Their way makes me see what I need to be doing.”
“Success is a result of combining wisdom and experience with fresh perspectives.”
This emphasis on collaboration is central to his philosophy: Success is a result of combining wisdom and experience with fresh perspectives. Surrounding oneself with diverse voices allows for growth and ensures that one’s vision evolves with the times.
Mentorship plays a crucial role in Ellerbee’s approach. Having experienced firsthand the challenges of youth in disadvantaged communities, he aims to provide guidance to those who need it most.
“As elders, we’ve got to start doing it. Stop becoming so judgmental about where these kids are. Spend some time with them…” he reflects. His desire to help shape the next generation is not driven by grand numbers but by the belief that even a small impact can create lasting change. It’s not completely altruistic, either. When we build the abilities and confidence of young people, we equip them with the tools to be effective in the workplace, creating stronger teams.
“The ability to be a strong mentor often comes from our own positive role models.”
The ability to be a strong mentor often comes from our own positive role models. In discussing the importance of leadership, Ellerbee draws from personal experience, acknowledging how his mother’s influence shaped his understanding of work and responsibility.
“At 10 years old, she said to me: ‘It’s time for you to start to contribute something to this house. You know where the supermarkets are. After school, you can go there and bag up those bags, and they’ll give you some money.’ She made you earn it, and she gave me all the key ingredients of survival,” he recalls. Her lessons of discipline and contribution were not just about making ends meet—they were about preparing him for life. This foundation gave him the tools to navigate the world of entertainment, where discipline and professionalism matter just as much as talent.
Finally, with new opportunities come challenges in trust. Ellerbee encourages caution when forming both personal and business relationships, highlighting the importance of being discerning when building a team.
"Trust isn’t easy to find," he warns, emphasizing that every partnership—professional or personal—must be built on mutual respect and shared goals. But at its core, Ellerbee’s message is simple: "Give people chances… love yourself and others."
It’s a reminder that, regardless of how high one climbs, lifting others up and bringing them together into hardworking and effective teams is not just an act of kindness—it’s an essential part of sustaining success.
